The Library

Historische Bücher

A library at the Foundation House Upper-Silesia was established parallel to the beginning with scientific studies in the early 1990s. The selective collection and continuous exploitation led to a valuable inventory. Works-editions of Silesian poets are available as well as complete release-orders of new annuary books of Upper-Silesian culture-accommodations in Polish language. Meaningful materials exist for many fields of culture and economy in the target region. The supply primarily procures on the different parts of Silesia and on the adjoining Bohemian and Moravian regions. The inheritances of litterateurs (e.g. Heinz Piontek) and scientists (e.g. Alois M. Kosler and Robert Samulski) are situated in extensive magazines.

The Information Centre Silesia-Moravia-Bohemia (FIZ)

Blick ins FIZ mit Arbeitsplätzen

Between fall 2006 and fall 2008 structural changes were conducted. As Information Centre Silesia-Moravia-Bohemia (FIZ) a converted requirement for information is answered. For the applier it is possible to do directly regional-historic research or own travel preparations. The supply is positioned freehand for presence use in a large part, except for titles published before 1945, which get special inventory keeping. All titles are newly listed in the catalogue. The installation as information centre was advocated financially as a project by the German governmental commissary for culture and media, as well as by the council’s government of Düsseldorf.

The Reading Room

A broad reading room offers enough working places for users. Book- and magazinesupplies, micro forms (roll films and micro fishes), current cards and maps (e.g. Upper-Silesian atlas, Oder-meadow-atlas, Lower-Silesian atlas), diverse media (cd, dvd, video, newspaper articles), as well as partially archival supplies can be used there. Copies of about 30 Silesian address-books are present for access.

The Catalogues

1Recherchemöglichkeiten im FIZThe admission of titles is carried out into the network-catalogue Eastern Europe. Thus an external search is possible. More than 450 periodicals are accounted in the magazine-database under the seal of the library.

Older instruments of verification and precious bibliophilic editions are often made useable, independent from place of being, as digitised media. In cooperation with partners some digital media was arisen, which can be bought. You will find further information on that in our museum shop. Another possibility is digital media in the internet, e.g. an album of Max Steckel.

The Project Digital Upper-Silesia (DIGOS)

At the Project Digital Upper-Silesia (DIGOS) it is ascertained which older regional considerable publications can be looked at online through the Information Centre. Additionally an analysis of the Polish and Czech digital libraries, which are in state of assembly, is taking place. The results will be injected into the network-catalogue Eastern Europe and also be available here. The first useful results are coming in the beginning of 2009.

Relevant inheritances are gladly accepted. Especially private specific collections can stay useable for the interested public this way.
